Group: Age 4 – Grade 1
This Lent, Get Caught Being Holy! The 40 days of Lent, which begin on Ash Wednesday and end on Holy Saturday (not counting Sundays), represent the time Jesus spent in the desert fasting, praying, being tempted by the devil, and preparing to begin his ministry. In this time of preparation for Easter, we focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (service). During Lent, Children’s Liturgy of the Word leaders will discuss with the children each of these practices and how they can pray, fast, and serve in their own lives – at home with their families, at school, or with friends. After reading the Gospel, the Age 4 through Grade 1 children will “fish” for ideas they can practice in the coming week, and bring home a paper fish with one suggested activity. Week 1 (March 10) we will focus on prayer: We can pray to give thanks to God for family, friends, and the good things in our lives. We can pray to ask God’s help for others or for ourselves. We can pray to ask God’s forgiveness when we are sorry for something we have done. Week 2 (March 17) we will focus on fasting: There are things we can give up that can help us get ready for Easter. We can give up some time playing video games or watching TV and instead exercise or play with a brother or sister. We can give up a treat or drink water instead of juice or soda. Week 3 (March 24) we will focus on service: We can put some of our allowance in the poor box at church. We can do our chores without complaining. We can play with someone who is feeling left out. Weeks 4 (March 31) & 5 (April 7) we will incorporate all these practices. For more ideas, click on the button to the left! We invite you to stop by the meeting room and have your child show you our Lenten display. |

Praying the Stations of the Cross
The 14 Stations of the Cross, represented by the beautiful sculptures along the walls in Sacred Heart Church, commemorate the events that occurred during Jesus’s crucifixion. This Lenten season during Children’s Liturgy of the Word, we will be talking about the Stations of the Cross with the children in Grades 2 – 5. Each week we will focus on 2-3 stations, pray about them, and think about something we can do during the week that reflects what we have talked about, whether prayer, fasting, or service.
